APSS/SICOT Spine Travelling Fellowship (closed)

Every year, SICOT and APSS (Asia Pacific Spine Society), the Spine Section of the APOA, will offer two selected candidates, who are from outside the Asia Pacific region, the possibility to travel to renowned centres in Asia.  

The first fellow will join a group of 4 participants in Tokyo (Japan) on 31 August 2017, where the Keio University (with Prof Mario Matsumoto) will be visited for one week. The group will then visit the Xijing Hospital (Xian in China, with Prof Zhuojing Luo) on 7 September 2017 for another week. Finally, the group will travel to Hong Kong to visit the Queen Mary Hospital at the University of Hong Kong from 14 to 20 September 2017.

The second fellow will also join a group of 4 participants in Singapore on 31 August 2017, where the National University of Singapore (with Prof Gabriel Liu) will be visited for one week. The group will then visit Seoul St. Mary's Hospital at the Catholic University of Korea (Seoul in Korea, with Prof Kee Yong Ha) on 7 September 2017 for another week. Finally, the group will travel to Coimbatore (India) to visit the Ganga Hospital from 14 to 20 September 2017.

All fellows of both groups will then attend the 11th Biennial Combined Congress of APSS-APPOS in Goa (India) from 22 to 24 September 2017.

The travel and accommodation costs will be covered by SICOT and APSS.

Kindly note that the fellow is solely responsible for obtaining a visa as well as for the payment of the visa fee and health/travel insurance. APSS will assist in securing the documents required for the visa application from the hosts (Korea, Singapore and Australia).



  • must not be from the Asia Pacific region

  • must be under 45

  • must be a SICOT member with membership dues paid two years in a row at the time of the application (the year of the application and the year before)

  • must have a university level of degree or country equivalent

  • must communicate effectively in English and have a legal status to go abroad

  • applicant must be currently active in spine practice (at least 50% of workload should be on spine surgery).

  • brief curriculum vitae (not more than 4 pages long)

    • qualifications (including degree(s), institution(s) and years)

      • basic medical degree

      • postgraduate orthopaedic education (e.g. FRCS Orth, MS Ortho …)

      • spine fellowship/attachment(s) – date and duration

    • present appointment(s)

    • publications/oral presentations/posters...

    • duration of experience in spine surgery

  • scanned copies of certificates and qualifications

  • scanned passport size photograph in JPEG

  • scanned copy of passport, with at least 6 months validity

  • recent health certificate (including lab results for blood tests)

  • 1 abstract related to spine of not more than 300 words. This abstract will be used for presentation at our next APSS meeting, as well as during the fellowship.
