Please check if the call for applications is open before sending your application.  

From 2016 onwards, any member applying for a Fellowship must have been in good standing (with membership dues paid) for at least the previous two years. Applicants not meeting this criteria will not be eligible.

SICOT members who have already received any of the SICOT fellowships this year and last year should not apply for any Fellowship Programme.

AAOS/SICOT International Surgical Skills Scholarship Program (closed)

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) is pleased to announce it is accepting applications for the AAOS/SICOT International Surgical Skills Scholarship Program. Through a generous contribution from SICOT United States, AAOS will award one scholarship to a SICOT member for the intended purpose to travel to the United States to attend a hands-on orthopaedic surgical skills course with cadaveric specimens.

Alexandria/SICOT Fellowship (open)

Every year, SICOT will offer two surgeons a six-month fellowship to Hadra Orthopaedic and Traumatology University Hospital, in Alexandria (Egypt). The accommodation will be provided for by Hadra Orthopaedic and Traumatology University Hospital. Travel expenses will be reimbursed by SICOT up to EUR 1,000 (economy ticket only). Taxis will only be reimbursed at a reasonable amount. Airport shuttle bus service must be used in priority to taxis. The purpose of the fellowship is to receive training in different specialized departments. The candidate will choose between one or two departments. These include arthroplasty, arthroscopic surgery, spinal surgery, paediatric surgery, microsurgery, hand surgery, and orthopaedic oncology. The training programme will start in January and July of each year.

APOA/SICOT Arthroplasty Fellowship (closed)

Every year, SICOT and APOA (Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association) offer four surgeons two- to three-week fellowships at centres of excellence in Asia Pacific countries. Two of these four fellows will be selected by SICOT from non-Asia Pacific regions. The SICOT candidates will see their travelling expenses be reimbursed by SICOT (economy ticket only; taxis will only be reimbursed at a reasonable amount; airport shuttle bus service must be used in priority to taxis), and APOA will take care of the hosting and accommodation expenses.

Assiut University/SICOT Training Fellowship (open)

Four to eight annual fellowships for a 3 to 6 months' training programme in the Assiut University Teaching Hospital are available for young English-speaking surgeons from Africa. The fellowship includes free full-board accommodation at the hospital, USD 100 per month for expenses, and a round trip economy class air ticket. The purpose of the fellowship is to receive training and experience. Permanent training programmes start in March and September.

B. Braun Aesculap/SICOT Orthopaedic Scholarship (open)

The B. Braun Aesculap/SICOT Orthopaedic Scholarships are open to surgeons from eastern Europe and Asia who want to evolve their knowledge and skills into innovative concepts in orthopaedic reconstructive surgeries of the hip and knee. The Scholarships consist of extensive exposure to innovative concepts in orthopaedic reconstructive surgery carried out at selected German hospitals with proven expertise in Short Stem THA and Computer Navigation. Every fellow who is attached to this programme will be integrated into the surgical programme of a selected German hosting clinical institution in a daily routine by attending surgeries and clinical meetings.

Bezmialem Vakif University/SICOT Fellowship (open)

Every year, SICOT offers two surgeons a two to three-month fellowship to Bezmialem Vakif University in Istanbul (Turkey). Accommodation and travel expenses will be reimbursed by SICOT up to EUR 2,500 (economy ticket only; taxis will only be reimbursed at a reasonable amount; airport shuttle bus service must be used in priority to taxis). The Bezmialem Vakif University offers free lunches. This hospital’s subspecialties are arthroplasty and joint preserving surgery for hip and knee.

Brussels University/SICOT Fellowship (open)

Every year FOSFOM-ULB (Bourse de soutien à la formation médicale de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles) offers trainees in medical specialties a one-year fellowship at a training hospital of Brussels University. The candidates are selected jointly by a Jury of Faculty Members of Brussels University and of local universities that have a convention with Brussels University. The selection criteria of FOSFOM can be obtained from them. Important criteria include being in training at one of the following universities and speaking fluent French to facilitate communication with the patients.

Charles Sorbie Professorship (open)

The Charles Sorbie Professorship was created to honour the memory of Professor Charles Sorbie, President of SICOT from 1996 to 1999, who promoted the SICOT Education Program during his mandate. The object of the Professorship is to evaluate and to improve the training in a SICOT Education Centre. This may include an audit of the Centre and related clinical departments, as well as lectures and advices in clinical problems and research. The Professorship will be awarded to any SICOT Education Centre on the basis of an application describing the past and present activities and the willingness to develop present and future programs.

EOA/SICOT Travelling Fellowship (open)

Every year, SICOT offers one Egyptian surgeon a two- or three-month Fellowship at a centre of his/her choice (but recognised as a SICOT Host Centre). Should the centre provide accommodation, SICOT will reimburse up to EUR 1,000 for travelling expenses (economy ticket only). If accommodation is not provided for by the host centre, SICOT will reimburse up to EUR 2,500 for travel and lodging expenses, depending on the length of the stay.

Ganga/SICOT Fellowship (open)

Every year, SICOT offers three surgeons four-week fellowships to Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore (India). This hospital’s subspecialties are Trauma and Spine. SICOT will reimburse up to EUR 1,500 for travel (economy ticket only; taxis will only be reimbursed at a reasonable amount; airport shuttle bus service must be used in priority to taxis) and accommodation expenses. The accommodation will be arranged by the Ganga Hospital.

German SICOT Fellowship

The fellowship was awarded for the first time in 2005 and is presented to the two best candidates who pass the annual SICOT Diploma Examination. The two fellows are invited to visit well-known German orthopaedic centres for a period of four weeks. Travel is organised by the German Section of SICOT. Special interests of the fellows will be taken into consideration in the choice of hosting centres.

Hiranandani Orthopaedic Medical Education Fellowship (open)

Hiranandani Orthopaedic Medical Education (HOME) is a department that is dedicated to the field of clinical research in Orthopaedics. HOME is working on a number of projects related to clinical research in adult hip and knee surgery. HOME conducted its first workshop on scientific publication (WOSP) in December 2009, in collaboration with the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British Volume). A number of scientific meetings have also been planned for the future. Research Fellowships, in adult hip and knee surgery, are offered by HOME. The tenure is for six months initially and extendable for a year. The Research Fellow will be a full-time research assistant with dedicated sessions for literature search, data entry, and management of a newly developed software called SwingSmart™. Bachelor accommodation and stipend are offered to the Fellow. The Research Fellow will be responsible for carrying out and completing the projects. The Fellow will be supervised by the two full-time consultant orthopaedic surgeons. There are targets and deadlines for the projects. The Fellow is expected to present the papers in national and international conferences.

Khoula/SICOT Fellowship (closed)

Every year, SICOT offers four surgeons twelve-week fellowships to Khoula Hospital in Muscat (Oman). The accommodation will be provided for by Khoula Hospital and SICOT will reimburse up to EUR 1,000 for travel expenses (economy ticket only; taxis will only be reimbursed at a reasonable amount; airport shuttle bus service must be used in priority to taxis). This hospital’s subspecialties are arthroplasty, sports medicine, spine, reconstructive surgery, complex fractures, oncology and many others.

Lagos National Orthopaedic Hospital/SICOT Fellowship (open)

Every year, SICOT offers 2 surgeons a three-month fellowship to the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Lagos (Nigeria). The accommodation and a monthly allowance will be offered by the National Orthopaedic Hospital. The travel expenses will be reimbursed by SICOT up to EUR 1,000 (economy ticket only; taxis will only be reimbursed at a reasonable amount; airport shuttle bus service must be used in priority to taxis). This hospital’s subspecialties are Arthroplasty/Orthopaedics, Oncology and Paediatrics. The Fellowship will take place between January and November of each year.

Makerere College of Health Sciences at Mulago Hospital/SICOT Fellowship (open)

Every year, SICOT offers two surgeons a six-month fellowship to the Makerere University College of Health Sciences at Mulago Hospital, in Kampala (Uganda). The Fellowship begins in July. The accommodation will be arranged by the Orthopaedic Department of the College of Health Sciences (Mulago Hospital). Travel (economy ticket only; taxis will only be reimbursed at a reasonable amount; airport shuttle bus service must be used in priority to taxis) and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed by SICOT up to EUR 2,500 for a six-month period. Should the fellow go for a shorter duration, then the maximum amount will be reduced. The subspecialties of the Mulago Hospital are Arthroplasty, Spine Surgery, Trauma and Paediatric Orthopaedics.

PKU Shenzhen Hospital/SICOT Fellowship (open)

Every year, SICOT offers 10 surgeons a one- to two-month fellowship at the Peking University Shenzhen Hospital in Shenzhen (China). The Peking University Shenzhen Hospital will provide accommodation in a 4-bed dormitory. Should the fellow prefer another type of accommodation, the Peking University will help search for it. The Peking Hospital will also provide the fellow with a daily allowance of RMB 200. The travel expenses will be reimbursed by SICOT up to EUR 1,000 (economy ticket only; taxis will only be reimbursed at a reasonable amount; airport shuttle bus service must be used in priority to taxis). This hospital’s subspecialties are spine surgery (3 places), sports medicine & rehabilitation (3 places), hand & microsurgery (3 places), and joint surgery (1 place).

SICOT meets SICOT Fellowship Programme (closed)

This SICOT programme allows surgeons, who are members of SICOT under 45 years of age and have finished their residency, to undertake a fellowship at a centre of excellence. The candidates will have access to, and the possibility to train in, all the orthopaedic subspecialties represented at the centre. Accommodation will be provided by some host universities/centres and SICOT will cover the travel expenses (economy) up to EUR 1,000. SICOT will reimburse up to EUR 2,000 (economy travel expenses included) for centres who do not provide accommodation. Depending on the length of the stay and the costs of accommodation, SICOT can cover this up to EUR 2,500 (prior approval required). Taxis will only be reimbursed at a reasonable amount. Airport shuttle bus service must be used in priority to taxis.

TCH/SICOT Research Fellowship Programme (closed)

The Texas Children's Hospital (TCH) is the largest and fastest growing children's hospital in the United States. TCH is nationally ranked number 4 among children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report magazine. The state-of-the-art facilities provide primary, secondary and tertiary care for a diverse population of chronically and acutely ill children. TCH collaborates with the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) to support a comprehensive pediatric medical education and research programme.
