Course Appraisal

The 1st Assiut Hip Arthroscopy Cadaveric Course

I attended the first cadaveric hip arthroscopy course in the Middle East which took place on 11-12 October 2016 at the Assiut Arthroscopy & Sports Injuries Unit (AASIU), Assiut University, Egypt. The course was under the chairmanship of Prof Hatem Said, Assiut University, and the co-chairman was Dr Ahmed Hazem, Cairo University, with the precious contribution of international faculty: Prof Richard Villar (United Kingdom), Prof Ali Bajwa (United Kingdom), and Prof Oliver Marin-Pena (Spain), in addition to a group of eminent national faculty.

The course was held during two days. The first day included lectures, two live surgeries and workshops, and the second day included cadaveric training.

The lectures on the first day were a comprehensive and simplified tour from the diagnosis to the techniques and postoperative rehabilitation. There was also a live transmission of a hip arthroscopy surgery of a FAI patient by Prof Hatem Said, in addition to a live arthroscopic demonstration on a cadaver by Prof Ali Bajwa with fruitful discussions during surgeries. Lastly, a workshop on hip arthroscopy (portal placement and diagnostic arthroscopy) and knot tying was done on models.

In the evening, a gala dinner with the faculty, participants and organising committee was a good opportunity for me to build friendships and enjoy tasty food.

The cadaveric day started at 09:00 and ended at 16:00 with 24 participants at 8 stations (3 participants for each cadaver) and an instructor for each station. Each station included a full hip arthroscopy set and a traction device. I started to work efficiently on the checklist, under the supervision of the instructor and in cooperation with my colleagues. We performed portals, capsulotomy, diagnostic arthroscopy, cam and pincer lesions, foreign body extraction and labral repair.

I highly recommend such courses for orthopaedic surgeons who are interested in hip surgery and I would like to thank the Assiut team for this great effort. I am looking forward to attending the next courses.
