Report on the 7th Educational Course in Moscow

Thami Benzakour
SICOT Ambassador - Casablanca, Morocco

This was my first mission as a new SICOT Ambassador. I had the honour and pleasure of representing our Society, as co-chair, of the 7th Educational Course organised by the M.F. Vladimirskii Moscow Regional Clinical and Research Institute (MONIKI), Faculty of Postgraduate Education, Prof O.S. Buachidze School of Orthopaedic Surgery, where the SICOT Education Centre is located, on 12-13 April 2012 in Moscow, Russia.

The theme of these two days was "Surgical treatment for degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the knee joint". My lecture was inspired by the 2010 special issue of our International Orthopaedics journal on "Osteotomy Around the Knee".

MONIKI is the head medical institute for the Moscow Region. It has its own education faculty for traumatology and orthopaedics. It has already conducted 6 educational courses on Orthopaedics and Traumatology. Prof Voloshin is the Chief of the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology which has 16 orthopaedic surgeons for 60 beds and three operating theatres. The ambiance is that of seriousness, motivation, and cooperation.

The excellent organisation of the meeting was under the responsibility of Dr S.A. Saravanan. The attendance of this Course was quite impressive in terms of the number of participants (around 150) and the high quality of presentations by senior surgeons. The organisers visibly promoted SICOT through the use of the SICOT logo and name in all meeting documents, invitations, programmes, certificates, and so on.

During the opening ceremony, a warm welcome and a hope for continued cooperation and education were expressed by the Director of the Institute, Prof Onoprienko, the Dean of Postgraduate Education, Prof Agafonov, and the Head of the Orthopaedics Department, Prof Voloshin.

I delivered an opening speech on behalf of SICOT recalling, as usual, our main objectives of spreading and exchanging orthopaedic knowledge throughout the world and encouraging potential members to join us through our online application form. A warm invitation was launched to actively participate in the SICOT Trainees Meeting in Moscow on 14-16 May 2012. I also pointed out the many advantages of participating in our next fabulous Orthopaedic World Conference in Dubai.

Within the exhibition hall of the MONIKI Education Centre, we hung five posters about joining SICOT, the application form, SICOT Awards & Fellowships, the International Orthopaedics journal, and the Dubai meeting.

The organisers deserve congratulations and many thanks for this excellent initiative to promote SICOT.
