Orthopaedics in India – "Yes, we are the power"

Orthopaedics as a distinct speciality started in India in the 1920s. It grew in terms of applicability and appeal and soon became one of the most respected fields of surgery. Postgraduation started in the country with the Master of Surgery in 1951. The Indian Orthopaedic Association was formed as a section of the Association of Surgeons of India in 1955. Today it has over 9,000 members. Recent changes have helped to further strengthen Indian Orthopaedics.

The early orthopaedic surgeons were generalists who dealt with all problems in Orthopaedics and treated patients of all ages. Their spectrum hovered largely around trauma, infections and degenerative disorders with occasional forays into other territories. As Orthopaedics expanded, subspecialists and specialty associations developed from the 1970s onwards and specialization gained a strong foothold. Specialist training was offered by way of fellowships for a year or two at specialized centres which developed all over the country. Clinical research and publications became a way of life. Indian innovations, such as the Jaipur Foot and JESS, developed and India became self-sufficient in manufacturing implants and internal prostheses.

Due to the huge population exceeding 1 billion, the volume and spectrum of orthopaedic disorders witnessed in the country is huge which makes it a very fertile ground for learning. With the subspecialties, experience and expertise has bloomed, and India can offer training and educational facilities to international surgeons who deal with a similar spectrum of disorders. It can also offer avenues for international collaborations, research and multicentric studies.

SICOT has a definite role to play in India by bringing the current state of the art, more training opportunities, help in developing international collaborations, friendships and research in Orthopaedics. SICOT (India) is working to further the cause through its various activities.

SICOT can bank upon India as a great force to fulfill its objectives.
