International Orthopaedics Special Issue on Sports Medicine - The Knee

Every year, International Orthopaedics, our scientific journal, publishes a special issue dedicated to a well defined orthopaedic condition. In February 2013 the sports knee will be highlighted from many different views. In this February issue of course many aspects around double or single bundle reconstructions, which is the topic this decade, will be included. Several papers will go into details looking at possible differences between single and double bundle ACL reconstructions by meta analysis and reviews. And from Pittsburgh itself we have a Freddie Fu paper, which teaches us when to choose for a double bundle and when not to. Besides that, there is also room for sound single bundle ACL reconstruction by a 2-portal technique from our Swiss friends, which seems to gain more popularity due to the difficulties reaching the anatomical femoral tunnel through the anteromedial portal. Is there still place for synthetic replacement of the ACL? An overview article together with a paper on medium term results will inform us further. And what do we actually exactly know about return to sports after ACL reconstruction today? A very critical paper from Julian Feller, president of the ACL study group will tell us all about this topic. Apart from all the clinical papers, this issue also contains a very interesting review of synthetic menisci. Where we are today with these menisci can be read in February 2013. We can also observe exciting results in PCL reconstructions from our colleagues from Italy and learn how to treat patellar tendonitis. Finally, what we do ourselves in ACL reconstructions is answered in an international survey among surgeons from many countries. In short, I invite you to read the above mentioned, among many other interesting papers, to learn all about the state of the art in treating the damaged sports knee joint in this February issue.
