• International Orthopaedics Special Issue on Sports Medicine - The Knee

Every year, International Orthopaedics, our scientific journal, publishes a special issue dedicated to a well defined orthopaedic condition. In February 2013 the sports knee will be highlighted from many different views. In this February issue of course many aspects around double or single bundle reconstructions, which is the topic this decade, will be included. Several papers will go into details looking at possible differences between single and double bundle ACL reconstructions by meta analysis and reviews. And from Pittsburgh itself we have a Freddie Fu paper, which teaches us when to choose for a double bundle and when not to. Read more...

11 instructional courses covering sports injuries, polytrauma, fractures, arthroscopies, failed back, paediatrics, joint replacements, and other topics will be held throughout the conference. • Report on the SICOT India Instructional Course Lectures

The first SICOT ICL was held at IMA House, Kochi, Kerala, on 28 and 29 April 2012. There were 44 eminent speakers from all over the country and many delegates. The sessions started at 08:30 and continued till 20:00 on both days. Prof Ashok Johari, SICOT National Delegate and Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, inaugurated the course. Read more...

Causes of a painful total knee arthroplasty. Are patients still receiving total knee arthroplasty for extrinsic pathologies?

Purpose Whilst patients undergoing total knee replacements generally have good relief of their symptoms, up to 20% complain of persisting pain. Revision rates have therefore been rising, particularly so for unexplained pain. We reviewed the causes of painful total knee replacements including extrinsic causes. Read more...

Orthopaedics in War-Torn Areas

• An Orthopaedic Surgeon’s experience in Afghanistan

Afghanistan has been characterized as a state torn with violence for many decades. Since 1979 the country has experienced major wars in which millions of Afghans have lost their lives and even more have been brutally injured. Eleven years after the last war in Afghanistan the political situation is far from stable and the violence between main actors still continues. With the growing conflicts, the Afghans have been trapped for decades in conditions of poverty and lack of access to medical treatment. Read more...

• Traditional Healers - How can we improve their treatments?

It is generally accepted that the great majority of fractures in low and middle income countries (LMIC’s) are treated by Traditional Healers. Only a very small percentage of injured patients will have contact with any form of conventional modern medical attention, and even when this is available it will often be given by doctors or health workers with little if any specific orthopaedic training. In response to the market demands, SYNBONE has been busy developing new larger spine models.

These models have been developed with the focus on the anatomical details. The joint surfaces along with the transverse and spinal processes on each vertebra have been redesigned to reflect a more realistic spine model.

In addition, these new spine models are all made with the new low density (LD) cortical bone mixture which we introduced earlier this year.
