  • Modified Impingement Test as a Pain Predictor after Rotator Cuff Repair

A recent study published in AJSM, has shown that injection of 8ml of 1% Lidocaine preoperatively in rotator cuff tears (RCT) has a good prognosis on the amount of pain relief on the VAS 1 year after the operation. Researchers performed the study on 159 patients and found that the improvement in the VAS and change in ASES was significantly related to modified impingement test. This can be a valuable tool in outpatient clinics where patients ask about improvement and outcome of the operation.

Aesculap's Performance in the Image Guided Surgery Market for Orthopaedic Applications

Aesculap's market share within the image guided surgery market for orthopaedic applications has increased significantly during the past couple of years. While the company held about 20 per cent of the image guided surgery market for orthopaedic applications in 2006, its market share in 2008 is estimated to be 27.5 per cent. This represents a 37.5 per cent growth in market share within two years. Just two years back, Aesculap was the third largest company in this field in terms of market share, whereas today, it is ranked second. In addition, the number of procedures in which Aesculap’s OrthoPilot navigation system is used, including total hip and knee arthroplasty, anterior cruciate ligament and high tibial osteotomy, also increased during this period. Moreover, when ranking the competitors by installed base in 2008, Frost & Sullivan found that Aesculap is perceived to have the largest installed base of image guided surgery systems for orthopaedics in Western Europe.
