Conference President - Pattaya AIC 2009

Dear Colleagues,

It is a pleasure to inform you that everyone in the Pattaya Conference Organising Committee is working hard to make the Conference both intellectually fruitful and thoroughly enjoyable. There will be over 800 scientific presentations that have originated from all corners of the world. They include presentations from 75 distinguished guest speakers. The plenary lectures will be given by Dr Suthorn Bavonratanavech, Prof Shoichi Kokubun, Dr Martin Krismer, Dr José Morcuende and Dr George Thompson. The scientific sessions will enable us to interact and exchange ideas on every aspect of orthopaedic surgery. Read more...

SICOT News

  • SICOT's 80th Anniversary

SICOT was founded on 10 October 1929 in Paris, France. To commemorate its 80th anniversary, Prof Charles Sorbie, President of SICOT from 1996 to 1999, will highlight the historical events and successes of the Society during the Presidents' Dinner on Saturday, 31 October at the world-class Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (Hall A) in Pattaya, Thailand. The celebratory event promises to be an entertaining, memorable and unforgettable evening for everyone. Don't miss it! More information about the Dinner can be found on the SICOT website.

The occasion will also be marked with a special editorial written by Prof Charles Sorbie and published in the October 2009 issue of the official journal of SICOT, "International Orthopaedics" (Volume 33, Number 5). The journal is available to all SICOT members and publishes the scientific work of researchers from more than 40 countries. To discover what else SICOT has to offer, please visit the SICOT booth (44G) in the Exhibition hall of the Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (Level 3).

  • SICOT General Assembly

All SICOT members are invited to attend the SICOT General Assembly which will take place on Friday, 30 October 2009 from 17:30 to 18:30 in Pattaya 11 at the Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH) in Pattaya, Thailand. The meeting agenda includes:

    • Opening remarks and approval of the minutes of the 26 August 2008 General Assembly
    • Report of the President
    • Report of the Secretary General
    • Report of the Treasurer
    • Any other business

The minutes of the General Assembly held on 26 August 2008 in Hong Kong can be downloaded via the Members' Area of the SICOT website.

  • SICOT Administrative Meetings - General Timetable

The general timetable for the Administrative Meetings on Tuesday, 27 October 2009 in Bangkok, Thailand, is available in the Members' Area of the SICOT website.

  • 2009 International Travelling Fellowship Report

Click here to read the report of Dr Ghulam Shabbir, who was offered the SICOT International Travelling Fellowship for 2009 and spent three months at the "Alessandro Manzoni" Hospital in Lecco, Italy, working under the tutorship of Prof Maurizio A. Catagni.

  • Case of the Month

In a 50-year-old patient, a cementless total hip replacement with metal bearings was performed on the right hip, with a lengthening of the leg of 2 centimetres. One year earlier, the patient had suffered a medial neck fracture, and after osteosynthesis, pseudoarthrosis could be observed.

About 9.5 years after the operation, the patient complained of increased pain in the right hip radiating into the right leg. The X-rays showed major osteolysis in the intertrochanteric area of the right femur. Read more...

  • Is on-call Orthopaedic Surgery associated with more complications?

A recent study in the JBJS Am, compared femoral and tibial nailing in the day list to the on-call night surgery. The rates of nonunion, infection and radiation exposure were similar in both groups, however, the on-call night surgery was associated with an increased frequency of painful hardware removal later on, possibly due to non-ideal conditions and shorter operative times.   • Trauma mortality and the effect of surgeon experience

A study published in the Archives of Surgery reviewed the mortality rates, in a Level 1 Trauma centre, of patients treated by experienced trauma surgeons in comparison to novice surgeons. There was no difference in the mortality rates, which suggests that the overall system of care is more important than individual experience. Read more...
