"The SICOT 75th Anniversary Book"

A book by Charles Sorbie, with the kind assistance of Rocco P. Pitto.

The Book tells the story of SICOT as far as its records show. Past and present staff have done a good job in preserving the SICOT archives which are housed in the basement of 40 Rue Washington in Brussels (Belgium). It was from these archives of print and photo that the book was compiled.

To the Book, context of events and photos of people who made the news, have been added. The first letter that promotes the idea of an international society was written by Dr Robert Lovett of Boston to Dr Vittorio Putti of Bologna and Dr Hans Spitzy of Vienna. It is clear from its content that these three had had prior discussions on the formation of a society. Lovett's letter was sent in 1913 and is among Putti's papers in Bologna at the Institute Rizzoli (Italy).

The Great War ended further development of the Society until the Founders, encouraged by a few far-sighted individuals to make the Society a reality, met in Paris on 10 October 1929.

The Book reviews these early days with great warmth and recounts the remarkable developments since then that have led to SICOT being the “Global” Society for Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology that it is today. It describes the origins of the Journal, International Orthopaedics, SIROT, the Newsletter, the Telediagnostic, the Diploma SICOT Examination, the Education Centre among other advances and provides a record of all its world Congresses.

Although not Harry Potter or the Da Vinci Code, it is well worth a read on a cold winter's night or even on a hot summer day!

The book is for sale at EUR 39.93 per copy, postage and Belgian VAT included.

"THE KNEE - A Comprehensive Review"

Edited by Giles R Scuderi (Insall, Scott, Kelly Institute, USA) & Alfred J Tria, Jr. (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, USA).

Concise and well written (all of the contributors are experts in their own areas of specialization), this publication will serve as a useful reference book for all orthopedic surgeons around the world.

This book covers all the basics of the knee for practicing orthopedic surgeons and residents who are finishing their training and preparing for the board examinations. The text begins with chapters on the anatomy, physical examinations, and imaging, before proceeding on to pediatric considerations, arthroscopic techniques, ligament injuries, trauma, reconstructions, and the future of knee replacement surgery.

There are many textbooks on the knee but no recent one has addressed the entire area of the knee from start to finish.

"Biomechanics and Biomaterials in Orthopedics"

A book by Dominique Poitout, Professor at Université de la Méditerranée, Marseille (France).

"Biomechanics and Biomaterials in Orthopedics" gives a completely novel description of the problems. For the first time a comprehensive overview on all materials used for implants and their biologic compatibility is given. Furthermore, it contains interesting tissue biomechanics and histomorphometry on fractures and influences by non-biologic and biologic material and especially deals with the problems arising in cases of growing bones. Moreover, the principles of biomechanics are explained by several forms of application in the normal and pathologic skeleton. Materials and techniques are described by specialists from all over the world; this edition, therefore, offers an excellent contemporary overview of biocompatible materials and the biomechanics of the locomotive apparatus. Each author gives his own view of the matter thereby rendering the book a very individual and diverse spectrum of the problems under discussion. The truly international character of the book is reflected authentically by the cooperation with SICOT and SIROT.

"Inflammatory Diseases of the Spine"

A book of major importance by S. Govender and J.C.Y. Leong.

Basic sciences and biomechanics of the spine have significantly contributed to the understanding and treatment of inflammatory diseases of the spine. Apart from spinal tuberculosis which is endemic in some parts of the world, the other inflammatory diseases are relatively uncommon and the diagnosis is frequently delayed. Effective treatment of these conditions requires a multidisciplinary approach.

Currently there are no books on inflammatory diseases of the spine and it was therefore the goal of the authors to produce a textbook on this subject. An international team of experts have collaborated in the production of "Inflammatory Diseases of the Spine". The authors were chosen from an international perspective, and are world authorities in the subjects they have written on, with extensive practical experience in treating such patients. The authors comprehensively cover biomechanics of spinal deformity in inflammatory diseases, radiological investigations, spinal tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, fungal infections and parasitic infestations.

"Inflammatory Diseases of the Spine", a book by S. Govender, MBBS, M.D., FRCS and J.C.Y. Leong, OBE, FRCS, FRCS (E), FRACS, FHKAM (Orth.), 2003, 228 pages (ISBN 981-04-8961-7), 1st edition, sold in English at the price of USD 60.00.

"The 10/90 Report on Health Research 2003-2004"

The Global Forum for Health Research launched its fourth report on the state of world health research. "The 10/90 Report on Health Research 2003-2004" covers progress in helping correct the 10/90 gap in health research over the past two years (less than 10% of the total amount invested globally in health research and development – currently estimated at close to US$75 billion – is spent on 90% of the world's health problems).

This report was prepared by the Secretariat of the Global Forum for Health Research on the basis of presentations and discussions at Forum 7, held in December 2003 in Geneva, as well as those at Forum 6, held in October 2002 in Arusha, Tanzania, and on the basis of the work of the Global Forum and its partners during 2003 and 2004. It expresses the views of the Secretariat.

The Global Forum has developed a methodology called the Combined Approach Matrix, which allows any funding agency – national or global – to determine its health research priorities according to the burden of disease. Another of the Global Forum's contributions has been to hold an international, interdisciplinary Forum on critical issues in health research each year since 1998. Forum 8, which will be held in Mexico in November 2004, will be organised together with WHO's World Summit on Health Research and will focus on the health research necessary to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The 10/90 Report is meant for all those who can help to change, in whatever way, the imbalance in the allocation of health research funding: those who fund research, those who set priorities, those who influence decision-making, those who provide information and evidence.

"Le corps réparé: le défi de la chirurgie orthopédique"
(The body repaired: the challenge of orthopaedic surgery)

A book by Michel Cymes and Marina Julienne, printed by France Info in collaboration with the Société Française de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie, SOFCOT.

Are you an amateur sportsman or maybe a professional one? Are you a musician or a mechanic? Is your child unruly? Whatever you are you know that few people can boast of being spared the risks of pathologies such as bone fractures or sprains. What these affections have in common is orthopaedic surgery and traumatology as a solution. The subject of this book is the therapies and techniques offered by this discipline.

It has been written by Michel Cymes in close collaboration with journalist Marina Julienne. Together they give details of the different traumatisms: bone, muscle, tendon, joint traumatisms, etc. and offer the causes and symptoms as well as different therapeutic solutions such as rehabilitation, operation, prosthesis, grafts, etc. This book is dedicated to presenting the unknown discipline of orthopaedic surgery to the general public.

Dr Michel Cymes is a doctor, a journalist and a medical columnist for the French radio station "France Info" and the general French TV channel "France 5".

Marina Julienne is a journalist who has specialised in medical information dedicated to the general public.

"The World Health Report 2008 - Primary Health Care (Now More Than Ever)"

Why a renewal of primary health care (PHC), and why now, more than ever? Globalization is putting the social cohesion of many countries under stress, and health systems are clearly not performing as well as they could and should. People are increasingly impatient with the inability of health services to deliver. Few would disagree that health systems need to respond better – and faster – to the challenges of a changing world. PHC can do that.

"The World Health Report 2008 - Primary Health Care - Now More Than Ever" Nonserial Publication, World Health Organization, 2008, 139 pages (ISBN-13 9789241563734 ISBN-10 9241563737, Order Number 12402008) is sold in English for the price of CHF 40.00/USD 40.00. In developing countries: CHF 20.00.

"Best Practice Protocols for Clinical Procedures Safety"

Protocols prepared by the World Health Organization.

Please download the PDF file: "Best Practice Protocols for Clinical Procedures Safety".

"Guidelines for Essential Trauma Care"

Injury has become a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Organised approaches to its prevention and treatment are needed. These guidelines seek to set achievable standards for trauma treatment services which could realistically be made available to almost every injured person in the world. They then seek to define the resources that would be necessary to assure such care.

The authors of the guidelines have developed a series of resource tables for essential trauma care that detail the human and physical resources that should be in place to assure optimal care of the injured patient at the range of health facilities throughout the world, from rural health posts, to small hospitals, to hospitals staffed by specialists, to tertiary care centres. They also take into account the varying resource availability across the spectrum of low- and middle-income countries. Finally, a series of recommendations is made on methods to promote such standards including training, performance improvement, trauma team organisation and hospital inspection. The resource tables and associated recommendations are intended to provide a template to assist individual countries in organising and enhancing their own trauma treatment systems. It is anticipated that the template will be adapted to suit local circumstances.

"Guidelines for Essential Trauma Care", a book by WHO in collaboration with the International Society of Surgery and International Association for the Surgery of Trauma and Surgical Intensive Care, 2004, 103 pages (ISBN 92-4-154640-9, order No. 11500570) is sold in English at the price of CHF 24.00. "World report on road traffic injury prevention"

A book by M. Peden, R. Scurfield, D. Sleet, D. Mohan, A. A. Hyder, E. Jarawan and C. Mathers.

Every day thousands of people are killed and injured on the roads. Each year millions of people spend long weeks in hospital after severe crashes and many of them are never able to live, work or play as they used to do. Current efforts to address road safety are minimal in comparison to this growing human suffering. That is why the World Health Organization and the World Bank have jointly produced this World report on road traffic injury prevention.

Its purpose is to present a comprehensive overview of what is known about the magnitude, risk factors and impact of road traffic injuries, and about ways to prevent and lessen the impact of road crashes. The document is the outcome of a collaborative effort by institutions and individuals. Over 100 experts, from all continents and different sectors - including transport, engineering, health, police, education and civil society - have worked to produce the report.

Road traffic injuries are a growing public health issue, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups of road users, including the poor. But road traffic crashes and injuries are preventable. Road traffic injury prevention must be incorporated into a broad range of activities, such as the development and management of road infrastructure, mobility planning, the provision of health and hospital services, child welfare services, and urban and environmental planning. The health sector is an important partner in this process. Its roles are to strengthen the evidence base, provide appropriate pre-hospital and hospital care and rehabilitation, conduct advocacy, and contribute to the implementation and evaluation of interventions.

The time to act is now. Road safety is no accident. It requires strong political will and concerted, sustained efforts across a range of sectors. Acting now will save lives.

"World report on road traffic injury prevention", a book by M. Peden, R. Scurfield, D. Sleet, D. Mohan, A. A. Hyder, E. Jarawan and C. Mathers, 2004, 238 pages (ISBN 92-4-156260-9, order No. 11500572) is sold in English and French at the price of CHF 30.00. In developing countries: CHF 15.00.

"Injury: A Leading Cause of the Global Burden of Disease 2000"

In 1999, WHO published the first volume of this document to inform policy-makers, health officials, researchers and the general public about the magnitude and ranking of injuries to facilitate informed decision-making and increase attention to this significant public health problem. With more attention and resources being allocated to injury prevention and control, it is important to provide up-to-date and accurate data about the magnitude of this problem. Therefore, the ranking tables are presented here with the most recent data available. The 15 leading causes of death/burden of disease are shown in tables by geographical region and income levels, by age and sex.

"Injury: A Leading Cause of the Global Burden of Disease 2000", 2002, 50 pages, nonserial publication, ISBN 92-4-156232-3, is sold at the price of CHF 25.00. It is available in English and can be ordered by e-mail under the order number 11500536 to bookorders@who.int.

"World report on violence and health"

A major report on violence by the World Health Organization.

Violence is a major public health problem worldwide. Each year, over 1.6 million people lose their lives to violence. Violence is among the leading causes of death for people aged 11-44 years of age worldwide, accounting for 14% of deaths among males and 7% of deaths among females. For every person who dies as a result of violence, many more are injured and suffer from a range of physical, sexual, reproductive and mental health problems. Violence is preventable - it is not an intractable social problem or an inevitable part of the human condition. It is a multifaceted problem with biological, psychological, social and environmental roots. Violence must therefore be addressed on multiple levels and in multiple sectors of society simultaneously.

The "World report on violence and health" is the first comprehensive review of the problem of violence on a global scale - what it is, who it affects and what can be done about it. The report attempts to dispel the hopelessness that often accompanies any discussion on violence. It illustrates not only the human toll of violence but also exposes the many faces of interpersonal, collective and self-directed violence. It also shows that many acts of violence are in fact hidden from public view and go unreported. All along it describes the magnitude and impact of violence throughout the world, examines the key risk factors for violence, gives an account of the types of intervention and policy responses that have been tried, and summarizes what is known about their effectiveness ; and makes recommendations for action at local, national, and international levels.

"World report on violence and health", 2002, 368 pages, ISBN 92-4-154561-5, is sold at the price of CHF 30.00 (in developing countries: CHF 15.00). Available in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian.
