"The SICOT 75th Anniversary Book"
The Book tells the story of SICOT as far as its records show. Past and present staff have done a good job in preserving the SICOT archives which are housed in the basement of 40 Rue Washington in Brussels (Belgium). It was from these archives of print and photo that the book was compiled.
To the Book, context of events and photos of people who made the news, have been added. The first letter that promotes the idea of an international society was written by Dr Robert Lovett of Boston to Dr Vittorio Putti of Bologna and Dr Hans Spitzy of Vienna. It is clear from its content that these three had had prior discussions on the formation of a society. Lovett's letter was sent in 1913 and is among Putti's papers in Bologna at the Institute Rizzoli (Italy).
The Great War ended further development of the Society until the Founders, encouraged by a few far-sighted individuals to make the Society a reality, met in Paris on 10 October 1929.
The Book reviews these early days with great warmth and recounts the remarkable developments since then that have led to SICOT being the âGlobalâ Society for Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology that it is today. It describes the origins of the Journal, International Orthopaedics, SIROT, the Newsletter, the Telediagnostic, the Diploma SICOT Examination, the Education Centre among other advances and provides a record of all its world Congresses.
Although not Harry Potter or the Da Vinci Code, it is well worth a read on a cold winter's night or even on a hot summer day!

"Inflammatory Diseases of the Spine"
A book of major importance by S. Govender and J.C.Y. Leong.Basic sciences and biomechanics of the spine have significantly contributed to the understanding and treatment of inflammatory diseases of the spine. "The 10/90 Report on Health Research 2003-2004"
This report was prepared by the Secretariat of the Global Forum for Health Research on the basis of presentations and discussions at Forum 7, held in December 2003 in Geneva, as well as those at Forum 6, held in October 2002 in Arusha, Tanzania, and on the basis of the work of the Global Forum and its partners during 2003 and 2004. It expresses the views of the Secretariat.
The Global Forum has developed a methodology called the Combined Approach Matrix, which allows any funding agency â national or global â to determine its health research priorities according to the burden of disease. Another of the Global Forum's contributions has been to hold an international, interdisciplinary Forum on critical issues in health research each year since 1998. Forum 8, which will be held in Mexico in November 2004, will be organised together with WHO's World Summit on Health Research and will focus on the health research necessary to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The 10/90 Report is meant for all those who can help to change, in whatever way, the imbalance in the allocation of health research funding: those who fund research, those who set priorities, those who influence decision-making, those who provide information and evidence.

"Guidelines for Essential Trauma Care"
The authors of the guidelines have developed a series of resource tables for essential trauma care that detail the human and physical resources that should be in place to assure optimal care of the injured patient at the range of health facilities throughout the world, from rural health posts, to small hospitals, to hospitals staffed by specialists, to tertiary care centres. They also take into account the varying resource availability across the spectrum of low- and middle-income countries. Finally, a series of recommendations is made on methods to promote such standards including training, performance improvement, trauma team organisation and hospital inspection. The resource tables and associated recommendations are intended to provide a template to assist individual countries in organising and enhancing their own trauma treatment systems. It is anticipated that the template will be adapted to suit local circumstances.Â

"World report on road traffic injury prevention"

Every day thousands of people are killed and injured on the roads. Each year millions of people spend long weeks in hospital after severe crashes and many of them are never able to live, work or play as they used to do. Current efforts to address road safety are minimal in comparison to this growing human suffering. That is why the World Health Organization and the World Bank have jointly produced this World report on road traffic injury prevention.
Its purpose is to present a comprehensive overview of what is known about the magnitude, risk factors and impact of road traffic injuries, and about ways to prevent and lessen the impact of road crashes. The document is the outcome of a collaborative effort by institutions and individuals. Over 100 experts, from all continents and different sectors - including transport, engineering, health, police, education and civil society - have worked to produce the report.
Road traffic injuries are a growing public health issue, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups of road users, including the poor. But road traffic crashes and injuries are preventable. Road traffic injury prevention must be incorporated into a broad range of activities, such as the development and management of road infrastructure, mobility planning, the provision of health and hospital services, child welfare services, and urban and environmental planning. The health sector is an important partner in this process. Its roles are to strengthen the evidence base, provide appropriate pre-hospital and hospital care and rehabilitation, conduct advocacy, and contribute to the implementation and evaluation of interventions.
The time to act is now. Road safety is no accident. It requires strong political will and concerted, sustained efforts across a range of sectors. Acting now will save lives.

"World report on violence and health"
Violence is a major public health problem worldwide. Each year, over 1.6 million people lose their lives to violence. Violence is among the leading causes of death for people aged 11-44 years of age worldwide, accounting for 14% of deaths among males and 7% of deaths among females. For every person who dies as a result of violence, many more are injured and suffer from a range of physical, sexual, reproductive and mental health problems. Violence is preventable - it is not an intractable social problem or an inevitable part of the human condition. It is a multifaceted problem with biological, psychological, social and environmental roots. Violence must therefore be addressed on multiple levels and in multiple sectors of society simultaneously.
