SICOT Young Surgeons Committee Chairman

Dear colleagues,

I have been elected as the new Chairman of the Young Surgeons Committee (YSC). This is a great honour and responsibility on my shoulders. I am very happy for the great support of a wonderful team who will help me with this job.

The previous Chairman, my dearest colleague Dr Hatem Galal Said, brought the Young Surgeons Committee to where it is now. He did a great job and showed an outstanding performance in the last four years.

SICOT is a global orthopaedic society and has a strong worldwide network. It has representatives in many countries on every continent. We meet every year in different parts of the world. These meetings are unique experiences where we learn, discuss and exchange knowledge. This is especially important for my young colleagues. The YSC has members from many countries thereby bringing diversity to it. It provides a platform for sharing ideas and opinions and when we meet, either physically or virtually, we enjoy aligning our enthusiasm to produce new projects. The YSC has several activities which have been developed and improved by its members to serve the global orthopaedic society. Some of them are as follows:

SIGNEL
SIGNEL is a multimedia orthopaedic site, with a constantly evolving interface and archive of scientific information. The content is indexed by the main categories of orthopaedic research and also searchable via the integrated 'search engine' function. However, SIGNEL is still in its early stages and has a long way to go. The YSC has now constituted a team dedicated to SIGNEL and is working on improving it. SICOT has realised the importance of investing in online resources. You will see a modern and user-friendly web page with high quality evidence-based and rich content.

Webinars
Webinars present an exceptional opportunity for meeting with experts online. The YSC and VuMedi have agreed on a collaboration to make periodic webinars under SICOT's name. Webinars are interactive events which provide opportunities to ask the experts questions directly or make contributions. They are not traditional one-directional and listen-only events. Until now, the YSC has produced webinars on "Infected Hip Arthroplasty" and "Pelvic Fractures". Hundreds of colleagues from all around the world attended these webinars and experienced a unique interactive session. The YSC will continue to arrange webinars in collaboration with VuMedi. The next one on 9 April 2013 will be about "Hip Arthroscopy" and will be moderated by Dr Hatem Said. More information can be found here.

Meet with experts
YSC is now working on meeting young surgeons and experts physically during the SICOT congresses. Unfortunately, the majority of young surgeons lack the opportunity to be in an academic environment once they set up their professional practice. They need to improve their practice and need to be aware of evolving techniques. Meeting with experts will provide an excellent pathway to evidence-based practice.

Educational Day
One of the most prestigious activities of the YSC is the Educational Day which has been taking place during the congresses for the last two years. The theme of the first Educational Day was "The Hip" and last year in Dubai the theme was "The Knee". This year in Hyderabad we have decided the theme will be "Trauma". All the important topics of trauma will be presented by surgeons who dedicate themselves to this specialty.

We have some other ongoing projects and we will announce them to you as soon as they are finalised.

New YSC
The next year will be a restructuring phase for the YSC. As the Chairman of the YSC, I am very happy to have many high-qualified colleagues working with me. With the help of my colleagues, we will reorganise our activities. We will collaborate with all of the SICOT committees, especially the Education Committee which is led by Dr Ashok Johari whose experience we can benefit greatly from. During this restructuring period we will be more than happy to have new members and receive their valuable contributions. I strongly suggest that our young colleagues JOIN US.

Our philosophy can be summarised with an African proverb: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together". We are a big family, we have a long way to go, and we have enough energy and enthusiasm to do it.
