Scientific Programme of Dubai OWC 2012
This is the first time I am writing in the SICOT e-Newsletter since my election in Prague to President Elect of SICOT. I should begin by thanking everyone for their support and confidence in me in serving the Society for the coming 7 years which I look forward to. It is a pleasant surprise to find one of my duties is to chair the Conference Scientific Advisory Committee and coordinate the annual meetings for the next three years. The committee started working as soon as the Prague meeting was over. With the collaboration of Dr Hashem Al Khatib, the local host of the Dubai conference, and the leadership of our President Maurice Hinsenkamp, Immediate Past President Cody Bunger, Secretary General Jochen Eulert and our Head Office colleague Tania Bellon, three meetings have been held in Paris, San Francisco, and lately in Brussels to prepare for the conference. This year is the first time we try to organise the conference programme through the 11 subspecialty chairmen. They are empowered to nominate speakers for instructional course lectures, organise symposia & workshops, select free papers and posters with a panel of reviewers, etc. Although there are some teething problems, the overall experience has been most amicable, educational and rewarding. They have brought the top speakers in their fields to a conference that no one can afford to miss. This successful template will certainly be exploited in future meetings.
The 3-day scientific programme is now taking shape and shall be released very soon. Drs Freddie Fu, Gamal Hosny, Chris Van Dijk and Chittaranjan Ranawat will be our plenary speakers. There will be 11 instructional courses, 27 symposia, 60 free paper sessions and, of course, open sessions of our many affiliated societies including the Pan Arab Orthopaedic Association. With a total of 780 oral presentations, 1,230 posters, and 188 focused posters, I take this opportunity to thank the section chairmen, Drs Abelow, Fucs, Itoi, Judet, Leslie, Marya, Monteiro, Rajasekaran, Van Dijk, Vecsei, and Windhager, for their tolerance and hard work. I would urge all SICOT members to encourage their colleagues to come to Dubai this November to enjoy the exciting scientific and social events.
