Peter Herberts

"CLINICAL AND HEALTH ECOMOMIC RELEVANCE OF THE SWEDISH HIP ARTHROPLASY REGISTER"

Peter G. Herberts, MD, PhD, a board certified specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery, became in 1989 Professor of the Department of Orthopaedics at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Göteborg, Sweden. He received his medical degree from the University of Uppsala in Sweden and his Doctorate in Orthopaedic Surgery from Göteborg University. Dr Herberts presented his PhD thesis in 1969 and was appointed Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1972 and full Professor in 1989. His main clinical interest during the last 30 years has been degenerative joint diseases and joint replacement surgery. Dr Herberts retired in 2004 but is still active clinically and academically.

A prolific writer, Dr Herberts has contributed with 190 original articles and over 280 abstracts to the international medical press. His work has appeared in well regarded publications as Journal of Biomechanics, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Clinical Orthopaedic and Related Research, Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica, Journal of Arthroplasty, European Journal of Applied Physiology, Ergonomics and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Peter Herberts has been supervising 18 PhD Theses and was Chief of the Joint Replacement Team at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital for 25 years. His main contribution was the foundation of The Swedish Hip Prosthesis Register 1976 (www.jru.orthop.gu.se) and he was chief and Director with responsibility for interpretation, analyses and Annual Reports up to 2005. He is still active in the leadership of the Register.

Dr Herberts is a member of the Swedish Society of Medicine, the Swedish Orthopaedic Society and the Scandinavian Orthopaedic Society and EFORT. He is also a member of SIROT/SICOT, The American Hip Society and The International Hip Society and The Orthopaedic Research Society, The European Orthopaedic Research Society and The Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society. He is appointed Honorary member of four of these Societies. Dr Herberts is past President of The International Hip Society and the SICOT National Delegate for Sweden.
